PESHAWAR: Pakistan is a strong and sovereign country and nobody will be allowed to interfere in its internal affairs, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said on Sunday.
Talking to reporters at the Bilour House after condoling with the Bilour brothers over the demise of their mother, he said the United States was a friend, which shared strong co-operation in defence, health, education and economy with Pakistan.
The prime minister said the federal government would co-operate with the NWFP government to restore peace in the province.
He said 99 percent of the people wanted peace in the country, adding that “a handful of elements are attempting to disrupt law and order”. He urged the majority to thwart the minority’s evil designs.
Gilani said the current wave of terrorism was bringing a bad name to Pakistan. He said the government wanted to develop the NWFP at par with other parts of the country, and that he would announce development packages for the province in his next speech.
He paid tribute to Frontier Constabulary (FC) personnel killed by the local Taliban in the Hangu district
Concerning the expansion of the federal cabinet, he said the cabinet did not have the required strength. “It is necessary to expand the federal cabinet to provide better facilities and immediate relief to the people,” he said.
Gilani said the government would soon form the National Finance Commission (NFC) and the NWFP would be given its due rights. “I have invited chief ministers of the four provinces to attend the federal cabinet’s next meeting in this regard,” he said.
